leboncoin and La Centrale: breaking free from listing platform dependency
Used cars accounted for 77 % of all passenger car purchases in France in 2025, according to SDES, the statistical service of the French Ministry for Ecological Transition (published February 2026). The main market is yours. And it plays out, overwhelmingly, on two windows: leboncoin and La Centrale. Listing there is not a strategic choice, it is the price of access to demand.
The trouble starts afterwards. Nassim Mazouni, of the SEO firm Grind SEO, puts it in a way worth repeating, taken for what it is, the analysis of a search professional: the issue for car dealers is not that they use the platforms, it is that they have built nothing alongside them. You pay for exposure you do not own, on an audience that is not yours, for contacts that arrive whenever they please, often at 9 p.m.
Breaking free does not mean leaving leboncoin. Nobody will, and nobody should. It means understanding what you actually own in that relationship, and investing there.
What a platform sells you is not a customer
You buy two things: exposure, and an inbox. That is all. A lead is not a sale, it is a message. What the platform sells you ends the moment the buyer starts typing.
Remember who stands beside you in that window. In 2025, the consumer to consumer channel still accounted for 47 % of the French used car market, against 43.6 % for the professional to consumer channel (NGC-Data, 2025, excluding overseas territories). You are not only competing with other used car traders. You are competing with a private seller listing his car on Saturday morning, on the same page, in the same format, behind the same contact button.
Against him, your inventory is no decisive edge. Neither, often, is your price. The one gap you can open immediately, with no investment, is the speed and the quality of your reply. The private seller answers when he gets home from work. You should answer before that.
La Centrale, for its part, claims more than 350,000 verified used car listings on its site. That figure is self-reported by the platform, and should be read as publisher data rather than as an independent measurement. It still says something useful: your listing is never alone, and the buyer messages several sellers on the same evening.
Dependency is not the usage, it is the missing alternative
Dependency operates on two levels, and they call for different answers.
The first level is acquisition. You have no audience of your own, no direct traffic, no reactivable contact base. That level is fixed slowly, over years, through content, local reputation, word of mouth and a properly maintained customer file. It has to be done. It will produce nothing this quarter.
The second level is handling. The contact arrives, it belongs to you, and it is already paid for. And that is exactly where the value evaporates. A buyer messages four sellers at 9:40 p.m. Three answer the next morning. One answers within ten minutes. The platform billed all four.
That second level is fixed in a week. It is the only place where dependency becomes reversible, because it is the only place where you own the relationship. Osmosia does not replace leboncoin and does not claim to. Osmosia raises the yield of every lead you have already bought.
A lead does not cost euros, it costs days of stock
The usual reasoning compares the price of a lead to the margin on a sale. It misses the point, because inventory keeps costing money while the conversation stalls.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, the average time to resell a used electric vehicle stood at 161 days, all ages combined, according to the quarterly barometer published by Mobilians and Avere-France. One hundred and sixty one days of tied up capital, insurance, forecourt space and sliding value. Every week saved on the sales cycle carries a direct accounting value.
Add scarcity. Used cars under 5 years old fell by 7 % in 2025, a direct consequence of the collapse in new car sales since the pandemic (AAA Data, Intelligence Auto no. 88). The most contested segment is also the slowest to replenish. A lead on a recent used car is not interchangeable with the next one.
This is where the two founding studies on response time matter. MIT Sloan and InsideSales, led by Dr James Oldroyd (2007), established across more than 15,000 leads that contacting a prospect within 5 minutes rather than at 30 minutes multiplies the odds of reaching them by roughly 100, and the odds of qualifying them by roughly 21. Four years later, the Harvard Business Review (Oldroyd, McElheran, Elkington, 2011), auditing 2,241 American firms, measured an average response time of 42 hours, with 23 % of companies never replying at all.
Two studies, two measurements, two dates. They do not say the same thing and they must be cited separately. Together, they say this: a lead does not die of its price, it dies of waiting.
The listing inbox is the one place you own
Twenty three percent of the companies audited by the Harvard Business Review in 2011 never replied. Never. On a contact they had paid for.
You are probably not in that 23 %. You are more likely the trader who handles the first six messages, leaves for a roadworthiness test, comes back at 7 p.m. to eleven new enquiries, and answers first the ones that look serious. The sorting happens on instinct, on tiredness, on arrival order. It does not happen on purchase intent.
Two moves are enough to change the yield of the window.
Answer fast, including when you cannot. In the evening, on Saturday, during a test drive. An instant reply does not only beat the competitor, it projects the image of an available professional, precisely where the competing private seller will not answer before tomorrow.
Sort afterwards, not before. A message asking whether the car is still available and a message proposing a viewing date do not carry the same weight. The second is a buying signal, the first is a first contact. Qualifying means putting a number on that difference, and calling the right one back first.
Your listings are already moving into generative AI
In February 2026, leboncoin and Aramisauto launched their own applications inside the ChatGPT environment, becoming the first two French used car players to do so, according to Le Journal de l’Automobile. In practice, their listing databases are connected to ChatGPT, which then makes recommendations from live inventory.
Olivier Flavier, automotive managing director at leboncoin, explains the move as a way to reach a younger audience that is turning away from Google in favour of generative AI. That is an attributed, dated executive statement, not a market measurement.
The same article adds a caveat it would be dishonest to skip: recommendation errors cannot be ruled out, and some suggested offers during testing were puzzling. AI in the used car journey is real, young and imperfect.
What does not change is the destination. Whether a buyer finds your Kuga through leboncoin’s search engine or through a conversation with ChatGPT, they end up writing a message in the same inbox. The upstream channel moves. The bottleneck stays exactly where it was, and it is you.
What Osmosia does, and what it does not promise
Osmosia plugs into the inboxes of your listings and replies in under 15 minutes, 7 days a week, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The reply is personalised: it answers the question asked first, in the voice of an adviser, without pushing a commercial follow up where the message does not call for one.
Every conversation receives a purchase intent score out of 100, reassessed with each exchange. A confirmed appointment does not weigh the same as a question about colour. Above the threshold you set, the contact surfaces in your interface and you are notified by text message or email. Follow ups are configurable, on delays you choose.
What Osmosia does not do: make you independent from leboncoin. No tool will. What it does is make you the owner of what happens after the click, on contacts you have already paid for.
FAQ
What you're probably wondering
A platform sells exposure and an inbox, not a sale. On leboncoin, professional sellers sit alongside private ones, who still accounted for 47 % of the French used car market in 2025 (NGC-Data). The one immediately actionable gap against them is the speed and quality of the reply to an incoming message.
Dependency has two levels. Acquisition is fixed slowly, through local reputation and a properly maintained customer file. Lead handling is fixed within a week, and it is the only place where the professional truly owns the relationship. Starting with the second is the only approach that produces a result within the current quarter.
Acquisition cost tells only part of the story. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the average time to resell a used electric vehicle reached 161 days according to Mobilians and Avere-France, meaning that much tied up capital. A lost lead does not cost its purchase price, it costs the extra days of inventory it could have avoided.
MIT Sloan and InsideSales (2007) measured that making contact within 5 minutes rather than at 30 minutes multiplies the odds of reaching the prospect by roughly 100. The Harvard Business Review (2011), across 2,241 companies, found an average response time of 42 hours and 23 % of companies never replying. In practice, aim for a reply within 15 minutes, evenings and weekends included.
The shift has begun. In February 2026, leboncoin and Aramisauto launched applications inside ChatGPT, connecting their listing databases to the model, according to Le Journal de l'Automobile. The same article notes that recommendation errors remain. The discovery channel is moving, but the conversation still lands in the listing inbox.
